Born in Yalding, Kent, Sadler initially started out at Maidstone United before signing his professional contract with Manchester United in 1963.
He quickly established himself as an incredibly intelligent and versatile asset to Sir Matt Busby’s iconic squad.
Though primarily remembered as a calm and composed central defender, his superb tactical awareness allowed him to step effortlessly into midfield or even play upfront as a striker whenever the team required it.
Sadler spent a highly successful decade at the club, making 335 appearances and contributing a remarkable 27 goals across all competitions.
He was an integral part of the historic United side that claimed two First Division championship titles in 1965 and 1967.
His defining achievement at the club came in May 1968, when he started at centre-half in the legendary Wembley final where Manchester United defeated Benfica 4–1 after extra time.
By lifting the trophy that historic evening, Sadler and his teammates ensured United became the first English club ever to win the European Cup.
