Manchester United’s world-renowned youth system was first established in the early 1930’s with the formation of the Manchester United Junior Athletic Club (MUJACs). The aim of the organisation was to identify, recruit and develop young local footballers with a view to them eventually progressing into the first-team.
When the F.A. Youth Cup was introduced in the 1952/53 season, United were years ahead of most of their rivals in regards to the depth of teenage talent on their books and they claimed the trophy for five years in succession. Over that period players such as Duncan Edwards, David Pegg and Bobby Charlton broke through to the senior side and helped to spawn the legend of the ‘Busby Babes’. Since then a multitude of other youngsters such as Johnny Giles, George Best, Mark Hughes, Norman Whiteside, Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Paul Scholes and Danny Welbeck have graced United’s first-team and gone on to figure at international level.
Sons of United charts the origins of United’s youth operation and details the formation of the F.A. Youth Cup, as well as a match report for every game the club has fulfilled in the competition from 1952 to their record-breaking tenth winning of the trophy in 2011. Containing a foreword by three-times F.A. Youth Cup winner and former manager Wilf McGuinness, the book also provides details of some of the club’s youth tours, over 100 player biographies, including every youth team captain, and dozens of photographs, many of which have never been seen publicly
